Let’s take a look at the blockbusters and aspiring blockbusters of the year and see how the marketing tricks of Snyder’s roadmap are repeated. See Gangster Squad, released in February. After an opening scene that sets up the conflict between Sergeant John O’Mara, a determined cop played by Josh Brolin, and the criminal forces of godfather Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn), O’Mara is summoned by his surly superior. We have rules here, little clever, growls the chef. Do yourself a favor. Teach them. From https://putlocker.pics/ you can find the best choices.
This is the second strong point of Snyder, the exhibition of the theme. It occurs right in the seventh minute, almost exactly where it is supposed to be found in a 110-minute film. And we find there all the rest of Snyder’s manual: a catalyst that starts the story in the middle of the first act, a mid-term shootout that increases the pressure, a moment when all is lost with a dead man between the 75th and 80th minutes, and a final act to conclude, where the bad guys are liquidated in increasing order of importance, just as Snyder recommends.
Other Films
Let’s also see the movie Jack the giant hunter, released in March. We find there the opening image which presents the problems of each of the young protagonists and exposes the theme at the fifth minute, a catalyst at the 12th minute, a pause in the action between the 25th and 30th minute, where Jack climbs the beanstalk, and a false victory after 90 minutes when it seems that the giant villains are definitely defeated.
- The fantasy world of Oz is a fun variation on the theme of director Sam Raimi’s first offbeat horror films. Now watch your watch at a quarter of the film and you will see a tornado that powers both Oz and the film in the first act.
- Once Oz has landed, he meets Theodora, a romantic object and hop that is the secondary plot. The adaptation of Gatsby the magnificent by Baz Luhrmann was organized so as to stick to the recipe, with a second-quarter full of entertainment and games where parties are legion, which leads to the decline of the third quarter, in which the tragedy threatens as the bad guys get closer.
Strange scenarios with holes
Field and McKee were obsessed with the theoretical basics of storytelling, but Snyder’s book is much simpler which is why he so absolutely conquered the big screen. Indeed, by being attentive, you can find the strengths of Snyder executed more or less in the order in which he prescribes them in almost all major cinema releases today.
Even the masters of Pixar’s narrative do not stray very far from Snyder’s bible: seeing Monsters University this summer, I loved the way the film played with very low-level athletes and with the conventions of the films of campus. Nevertheless, the story goes through each of Snyder’s highlights, including an opening image reflected in the final scene, a pause in the action when Mike and Sully regretfully join together to participate in the Games of the Fear. A false victory about three-quarters of the film when they “win” the final challenge of the Games of Fear, followed by a moment when all is lost then by a dark night of the soul emotionally charged, near a moonlit lake.
